Plants against pollutants
In 1980, Dr.Bill Wolver ton of NASA has conducted studies on the recycling of air in space shuttles. This early work revealed that the plants, living things that eat and exchange with the external environment, have the ability to clean the air significantly. Since then, various investigations have confirmed its results.
In France, the program includes Air December 2001 from the research of CSTB (Scientific and Technical Center Building) from Nantes and the Faculty of Pharmacy Lillie. 3 plants (dracaena marinate and scandisks aurous) and 3 pollutants (toluene, carbon monoxide and formaldehydes) have mainly been studied.
These studies indicate that plants absorb pollutants mainly through the roots and leaves. It does not present a micro-organisms present in the substrata.
Of course, plants alone can not ensure clean air! They should come with a more comprehensive, preventive (with building techniques and materials healthier) and curative (manual ventilation, etc.). See below.
