Personal Information?

Ok I was being a little stupid while trying out this site called Omegle and ended up giving my full name out to some random person.I’m a little freaked out that this person could actually find where I live just from the name I gave him.My last name is all over the internet so its not that hard to find? Should I be worried? What should I do? I’m 18 years old so its not like i’m a vulnerable kid.I am just wondering if some crazy guy is actually going to try and find me…I also might have told the person the state I live in but nothing more.

Thanks and serious answers please.

There shouldn’t be anything to be afraid of if you live under a household that is owned by a person of a different last name.If you own a house under your own name, it is in your best interest to contact your home phone provider and request them to remove “last name look-up” in all last name look ups for phone number and addresses. For example “yellow pages, white pages, canada411” are some sites that have the ability to let you search someone by last name and let you find out their address and/or phone number.

Hope this helps!

Best regards, Tom.

It’s unfortunate, but Internet users must come to realize that giving out ANY info is no longer safe; even when dealing with well known companies.
With greed sweeping every nook and cranny, information is sold like cotton candy at the carnival. And these blind chat sites may not be anywhere near safe in a personal, physical context.
Predators are everywhere, so mask your identity, date of birth, hometown, schools attended, anything at all, whenever possible.

I strongly doubt that your identity will be stolen because you gave out your full name. It’s not like you gave out your credit card or social security information.

However, if you have been exposed to a potentially dangerous website your computer might have been compromised. So I would strongly advise scanning your computer with some good security software like Kaspersky or Norton, clearing all of your cookies from your browsers, and changing your passwords once you know you’re computer doesn’t have any malwares.

It probably wasn’t the name that he used to find out where you lived, although it is possible I suppose. My guess is he used your IP address and an IP location tool (like GeoIP) to find out the general area where you live, at which point your name could be used to find your exact address from yellow pages.I really wouldn’t worry about it, he was probably just messing with you…

Easiest way to get someone’s IP address through omegle:
This assumes you have a website – Send a link to the person you are chatting with to your own website, then, watch the server logs for the URL you sent, i.e.tail -f /var/log/httpd/access_log | grep theurl.html.

Once you have the IP address:
Plug it in at Maxmind’s GeoIP page here –
http://www.maxmind.com/app/locate_demo_ip

if hes really good with computers he could find you, but you more then likely safe.as in he probably doesnt have the knowledge base to find you.and please remember(as a network administrator i constantly tell people this) as soon as you connect to the internet, you forfeit your privacy to anybody who knows how to take it.
