Can a virus spread to my computer or other removable devices even if it is put into another removable device?

In case a virus is within my external hard drive or any other removable disk being a USB Adobe flash Drive, can the idea spread in order to my pc or various other removable devices connected Or maybe can it affect my PC even when it is found there
