Playing movies on a mac. PLEASE HELP!?

I have have a.mkv flick and cant have fun with it upon vlc as well as divX about my mac pc.it just quits unexpectedly like 5 a matter of minutes in.The variants are up to date as good.if anyone knows hot to renovate this please help my family out!:(
