Security Essentials: free antivirus for Microsoft’s online
The publisher launched Tuesday, September 29 its new security software, available after the failure of OneCare, unappreciated by critics.
Almost three months of testing to the general public, Microsoft is launching its free antivirus this Tuesday, September 29. Security Essentials 1.0 (formerly Morro) is available in French and in seven languages across nineteen countries.
The software runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 in 32 and 64-bit. It is only available for download (see box below) and Microsoft does not distribute through its service to update Windows update, nor does it offer the Windows 7, due on 22 October.
Security Essentials fight against all forms of malware, virus, trojan, rootkit spyware and other …But his mission ends. Unlike OneCare security suite launched by Microsoft pay there is nearly two and a half years, the new software does not offer any PC maintenance (backup, cleaning, etc..).
“Onecare solution was too complicated to be used by all users,” admits Bernard Ourghanlian, director of technology and security from Microsoft. Security Essentials will obscure the failure of this solution pay, criticized for its antiviral efficacy, and that Microsoft has stopped marketing.
The publisher presents its antivirus as simple to use. This starts the installation:”There is no information to provide, no credit card number to give, no trial period or renewal, says Bernard Ourghanlian. These are all obstacles to the use a virus that we wanted to delete.
But Microsoft has not given up everything. During installation, the software tests the authenticity of the version of Windows installed to detect illicit versions of the system. In other words, hackers will not be eligible for Security Essentials, as they enjoy the latest critical security update released by Windows.
Another promise, Security Essentials is the least intrusive. “The real-time protection software slows down the processor at least, insists Bernard Ourghanlian, so that the user does not attempt to stop the virus because it would slow the PC.The occupation of memory would be minimized. The virus signatures (updates automatically) load gradually as to avoid unduly occupy the resources.
Similarly, the software runs the periods of inactivity of the PC to the scanner in search of malware (apart from the first analysis), so as not to disturb the user. On these points, the first beta testers confirm the discretion of Security Essentials. It will take further tests to assess its effectiveness to detect and eradicate malware.
The arrival of this free solution should not happy publishers who already offer free solutions. Unlike the latter, which broadcast the free with the hope of attracting customers to pay their solutions, Microsoft has nothing to sell to users. From there to acknowledge the editor to dump, there is only one step.
